ABOUT

I’m a British female painter currently based just outside Bath. I work in a contemporary abstract manner, inspired by the natural world, currently researching ecological and sustainable issues. My recent paintings explore my appreciation of nature and concern for the earth's fragility, through painting with earth- derived pigments, mirroring layers of earth and growth. Each brushstroke holds linkages to the natural world through painting, abstracting my emotions, communicating them onto raw canvas. Each painting begins with a layer of earth pigment paint that acts as a layer of soil for each mark made to grow through. There is a natural tendency that the audience find patterns within my work, whether that be a symbol, letter, object or figure, which emerge subconsciously through the canvas. I respond to the canvas through energy, addressing current issues of ecology and sustainability. I hope to offer a space of contemplation of the natural world's beauty and fragility in harmony. Working from memory, life, imagination and the subconscious, I paint as a form of meditation, grounding myself from the fast- paced world we live in today while  reflecting on ecological issues and the human connection to earth.

Currently my work is grounded in abstraction and influenced by ecological concerns which inform my use of sustainable materials. These concerns are embedded in the way I approach painting, which I have developed whilst studying on the RCA Graduate Diploma. I work on stretched canvas, with natural oil paints and earth- derived pigments. My inspiration is rooted in a deep engagement with the natural world. Painting is a form of expression, meditation, and connection playing a fundamental role in my process. Grounded with the earth, I escape from the chaos of everyday life.

While  painting is an intuitive act for me, it also echoes conversations of the environment, and the human experience. My process begins with a layer of earth pigment, acting as a symbolic soil layer from which the painting grows. Representing a conceptual framework, the painting embodies each mark and gesture of growth constantly transforming. The act of preparing pigment from soil samples became a practice within itself - grounding my practice to earth. The marks made, layer upon layer of thin paint build up an untold story and connection to my appreciation of earth. Natural pigment and oil paint spill across the canvas,  with each brushstroke conveying another emotion or subconscious thought. Painting feels like an out of body experience, each mark is by chance touching back down to earth. The audience are often captivated by forms or objects found in the finished paintings, placed subconsciously, acting as dialogue between myself and the viewer. My work engages with deep rooted abstraction while reimagining a contemporary gesture, driven by a reflection of the natural world and the way I experience it.
